Protecting Pets from Bird Flu: What Every Pet Owner Needs to Know
Since December 2024, over two dozen cases of H5N1 avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, have been confirmed in domestic cats across the United States. This concerning development has highlighted a new route of transmission through contaminated raw pet food and unpasteurized milk. To safeguard the health of pets, the FDA has introduced new regulations targeting pet food safety. Here’s what you need to know to protect your furry family members.
What’s Happening with Bird Flu in Cats?
Bird flu is caused by the H5N1 virus, which has historically affected birds but can also infect mammals, including cats. Recent cases have shown that cats can contract the virus by consuming:
- Contaminated raw pet food: The first confirmed link between bird flu and commercially available pet food.
- Unpasteurized milk: Some cats became ill after consuming raw milk containing the virus.
The affected areas include California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington, with cases reported in both domestic and exotic cats. Tragically, an outbreak at a sanctuary in Washington state led to the deaths of 20 exotic cats, including a Bengal tiger and several cougars.
Are There Cases in Canada?
As of January 2025, there have been no reported cases of H5N1 avian influenza in domestic cats in Canada, including Ontario. However, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed cases of avian influenza in domestic birds across the country. Additionally, a recall of raw pet food has been issued in the United States due to contamination with H5N1, with some affected products distributed in British Columbia, Canada.
Given the proximity and the distribution of potentially contaminated products, it’s crucial for Canadian pet owners to remain vigilant. The Canadian Animal Health Surveillance System (CAHSS) has emphasized that cats are susceptible to H5N1, especially if they consume raw milk, infected birds, or infected mice.
Symptoms of Bird Flu in Cats
Cats infected with H5N1 may show severe symptoms, including:
- Lethargy
- Respiratory distress
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Neurological signs such as seizures
Prompt veterinary care is essential if your cat exhibits any of these symptoms.
FDA’s New Regulations
To address this issue, the FDA now requires pet food manufacturers using uncooked or unpasteurized materials derived from poultry or cattle to:
- Reevaluate their food safety plans.
- Focus specifically on identifying and mitigating the risk of H5N1 contamination.
These measures aim to reduce the risk of transmission through commercially available pet food.
How Can Pet Owners Protect Their Pets?
- Avoid Raw Diets: Refrain from feeding your pets raw or unpasteurized products, including raw pet food, milk, and eggs.
- Prioritize High-Quality Food: Choose pet foods from reputable manufacturers that follow rigorous safety standards.
- Practice Hygiene: Wash your hands thoroughly after handling pet food or cleaning feeding areas.
- Monitor for Symptoms: Stay vigilant for any signs of illness in your pets and seek veterinary care immediately if you notice anything unusual.
- Stay Informed: Keep up with updates from trusted sources like the FDA, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), and your veterinarian.
