Wellness Care for Puppies & Kittens in Toronto, Ontario
Puppies and kittens need to see their veterinarian as soon as possible to begin a healthy, happy life with their families. Since dogs and cats both age much faster than we do, they can experience significant health changes within a very short time. Westway Animal Clinic will work with you to develop a wellness plan that is closely tailored to your puppy’s or kitten’s needs, so we can take a proactive approach to keeping them healthy. That means protecting your pet from various diseases and diagnosing issues early, so they can be treated and managed quickly.

Puppy Care
It is extremely important for your puppy to see their vet and begin their wellness regimen in their first few months of life. Our veterinary team will be happy to guide you along in understanding your puppy’s health, their needs, and how to help them grow into a happy, well-behaved companion.
How Soon Should My Puppy See the Vet?
We recommend seeing your puppy at 6-8 weeks old if possible, so we can perform a thorough physical exam, check their stool for worms, and administer their first round of booster shots. Many puppies and kittens present to us with roundworms, which is normal, but it’s important to treat roundworms as soon as possible. We can provide deworming medication to eliminate the worms and keep your puppy healthy.
Their First Checkup
During your puppy’s initial checkups with us, we’ll discuss all aspects of their care, including:
- Nutrition
- Behavior
- Training
- Socialization
- Parasite prevention
Puppy Boosters
Your puppy is going to be vulnerable to preventable diseases like distemper, parvo, and rabies unless they get vaccinated. We will start by administering your pet’s boosters with several weeks in between each vaccination to build up their immunity safely.
Kitten Care
Kittens should also see their veterinarian as soon as possible to get the care they need to grow up healthy.
How Soon Should My Kitten be Seen?
Like puppies, we can see kittens as early as 6-8 weeks of age to perform a physical exam, check their stool for parasites, and start their first booster series. Kittens are also prone to roundworms and other intestinal parasites, so we need to do a fecal exam to check for worms and eggs. If necessary, we can administer deworming treatment to eradicate the roundworms.
Their First Checkup
Other aspects of your kitten’s care we’ll want to establish:
- Nutrition
- Litter box training
- Parasite prevention
- Creating an enriching home environment for your kitten
Kitten Boosters
Kittens are vulnerable to a variety of diseases, including rabies, panleukopenia (also known as “feline distemper”), and, depending on their risk level, feline leukemia. To build up their protection, we will likely administer their first feline distemper vaccine at their first visit, then give them their boosters when they return for checkups.
